  2. MICROSOFT BOOKSHELF 1994 FOR WINDOWS
  3. ====================================

  5. This file contains information about Microsoft Bookshelf that was
  6. unavailable when the User's Guide was printed. To read this file on
  7. screen, use the Page Down and Page Up keys, or the scroll bar. 
  8. To print the file, choose the Print command from the File menu.
  9.  
  10. Multimedia technology, with its array of new hardware and 
  11. software, can present a variety of potential performance and 
  12. configuration issues. Some of these issues are addressed here.

  32. CORRECTING SOUND PROBLEMS
  33. =========================
  34.  
  35. If you don't hear anything when you play animations or 
  36. pronunciations, be sure that
  37.  
  38. *  A sound card is installed.
  39.  
  40. *  A speaker is connected to the jack on your sound 
  41.    card (not to the CD-ROM drive).
  42.  
  43. *  The volume is set to an audible level.
  44.  
  45. You can test sounds with the Sound option in the Windows 
  46. Control Panel.  If you hear no sound during the tests, 
  47. open the Drivers option to check the sound driver files.  
  48. These drivers must be compatible with your sound board.  
  49. Be sure that drivers for both WAVE audio and MIDI-synthesized 
  50. music appear in the Drivers dialog box.  If necessary, set 
  51. up your sound board again.  If you still can't hear sounds, 
  52. contact the sound board manufacturer to verify that you are 
  53. using the correct drivers and that no hardware 
  54. conflicts exist.
  55.  
  56. If you have installed the Windows 3.1 operating system 
  57. and can play pronunciations but not musical examples, 
  58. you might need to change your MIDI map.  When Windows 3.1
  59. is installed, Setup renames the MIDIMAP.CFG file to 
  60. MIDIMAP.OLD and installs a new MIDIMAP.CFG file.  If your 
  61. original MIDIMAP.CFG file contains custom setups that use 
  62. sound drivers not provided by Windows, you can change the 
  63. port settings using the MIDI Mapper option in the Control 
  64. Panel, or you can use your original file by performing the 
  65. following steps:
  66.  
  67.   1.  Rename MIDIMAP.CFG to MIDIMAP.WIN.
  68.   2.  Rename MIDIMAP.OLD to MIDIMAP.CFG.
  69.  
  70.  
  71. ====================================
  72. IMPROVING THE SPEED OF YOUR COMPUTER
  73. ====================================
  74.  
  75. Bookshelf 1994 uses a lot of your system memory to display 
  76. graphics, animations, and video clips.  If Bookshelf seems 
  77. to run slowly, try taking the following steps to improve 
  78. your computer's performance:
  79.  
  80. *  Close all unnecessary applications.
  81.  
  82. *  If your computer is a 386, set up a permanent Windows 
  83. swap file on your hard drive.  (See your Windows User's Guide 
  84. for more information.)  Windows usually creates a temporary 
  85. swap file, but if your hard disk is full or fragmented, this 
  86. temporary file can become unavailable.  Make the size of the 
  87. permanent swap file at least 2048K (kilobytes).
  88.  
  89. *  If your computer runs at 20 MHz or slower and you have 
  90. only 2 MB (megabytes) of RAM, use a 16-color driver for your 
  91. display, even if your video card is capable of displaying 256 
  92. colors. To change the display driver, run the Microsoft Windows 
  93. Setup program from MS-DOS or Windows and select the standard 
  94. VGA driver.
  95.  
  96. *  Run Bookshelf without the SmartDrive device driver.  To 
  97. disable SmartDrive, open the CONFIG.SYS file in Notepad, 
  98. change the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line to REM 
  99. DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS, and then save the edited CONFIG.SYS 
  100. file.
  101.  
  102. *  Defragment ("clean up") your hard disk by running a disk 
  103. defragmentation program.
  104.  
  105. *  Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC-compatible (that is, 
  106. that the drive can transfer data from the CD at 
  107. 150 KB per second while using less than 40% of the CPU 
  108. bandwidth, AND that the drive has an average seek time of
  109. less than one second). Check the documentation that came
  110. with your CD-ROM drive.
  111.  
  112. *  Add more extended memory to your computer.  You can 
  113. determine how much extended memory is available by typing 
  114. MEM and pressing Enter at the MS-DOS prompt.  You need a 
  115. minimum of 4 MB of memory to play sounds and run 
  116. animations.
  117.  
  118. For comprehensive documentation on improving performance,

  123. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
  124. ===================
  125.  
  126. * Bookmarks and annotations are not updated from older versions
  127. of Bookshelf. If you install a new version, you must create new
  128. notes.
  129.  
  130. * If a screensaver takes over the screen during the Bookshelf
  131. demo, the demo will be reset to the first frame. (You might want 
  132. to disable screensavers while viewing the demo.)
  133.  
  134. * When copying 256-color images, be aware that unless you copy
  135. to a program that can handle 256 colors, such images will appear
  136. in 16 colors.
  137.  
  138.  
  139. =======================
  140. HARDWARE-SPECIFIC NOTES
  141. =======================
  142.  
  143. The following are known hardware-specific issues that can affect
  144. Bookshelf. Where possible, solutions or workarounds are provided.
  145.  
  146. Dell 16-color drivers (512K memory)
  147. -----------------------------------
  148. * A white outline surrounds animations.
  149.  
  150.  
  151. Tiga 16-bit driver (640x480)
  152. ----------------------------
  153. * Bold phrases and hot text sometimes shift down by about half 
  154. a line, partially obscuring the text beneath them. Try moving 
  155. to a different article and then returning; this typically 
  156. solves the problem.
  157.  
  158.  
  159. Tiga 24-bit driver (640x480)
  160. ----------------------------
  161. * A white outline surrounds animations, partially obscuring other
  162. animation elements and labels.
  163.  
  164. * Some graphics might appear slightly fuzzy and grainy.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. DeskJet 500C Color Printer
  168. --------------------------
  169. * If you try to print in color while using the
  170. unidrv.dll driver, you might experience problems. To solve
  171. the problem, choose Print from the File menu, and then click
  172. the Setup button. In the Setup dialog box the Color box 
  173. should be unchecked.
  174. Try printing again.
  175.  
  176.  
  177. Dell Video Driver P32K600 
  178. -------------------------
  179. * A bitmapped image appears along with extraneous lines 
  180. across the screen, followed by system failure.
  181.  
  182. * Contact Dell and obtain the proper drivers.
  183.  
  184.  
  185. Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16/16ASP
  186. --------------------------------------
  187. Compressed audio clips may fail to play if you are using a 
  188. Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster 16 ASP sound card. For 
  189. example, you may not be able to play any sounds in the 
  190. dictionary, but animations in the encyclopedia may play correctly.
  191. This problem occurs because some computers are unable to use 
  192. the 16-bit DMA (direct memory access) channel on the Sound 
  193. Blaster cards.
  194.  
  195. To correct this problem, switch the HDMA channel to use DMA
  196. or 8-bit DMA. You must change this setting in the following 
  197. two places:
  198.  
  199.  - The Drivers dialog box in the Windows Control Panel
  200.  
  201.    -and-
  202.  
  203.  - The SBCONFIG.EXE configuration program included with the 
  204.    Sound Blaster cards
  205.  
  206. To change the settings, follow these steps:
  207.  
  208. 1. Choose the Drivers icon in the Windows Control Panel.
  209.  
  210. 2. Select the Sound Blaster 16 Wave/Midi driver and choose Setup.
  211.  
  212. 3. Under the HDMA setting, set the selection to DMA.
  213.  
  214. 4. Choose OK. Choose Do Not Restart Now.
  215.  
  216. 5. Exit Windows.
  217.  
  218. 6. At the MS-DOS prompt, switch to the SB16 directory and run
  219.    SBCONFIG.EXE.
  220.  
  221. 7. Follow the instructions provided by this configuration program. 
  222.    It assists you in selecting and testing the following 
  223.    variables:
  224.  
  225.     Variable        Select
  226.     ------------------------------
  227.  
  228.     Base I/O port           Autoscan
  229.     MidiPort address       Autoscan
  230.     DMA interrupt           Current
  231.     8-bit DMA           Current

  234. After you have finished making these selections, the SBCONFIG 
  235. program will restart your computer.
  236.  
  237. 8. Restart Windows.
  238.  
  239. All compressed audio should now play correctly.
  240.

  249. Media Vision  Pro Audio Spectrum 16
  250. -----------------------------------
  251. A small number of Media Vision sound card drivers (Pro Audio 
  252. Spectrum cards) may cause problems.  If you have a Media Vision 
  253. card and don't hear sounds, try upgrading your driver.
  254.  
  255. * The wave driver fails while playing pronunciations in the 
  256. dictionary, encyclopedia, and altas.
  257.  
  258. * Contact Media Vision. (For information on contacting Media
  259. Vision, see below.)
  260.  
  261.  
  262. Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum
  263. -------------------------------
  264. Audio clips may sound "scratchy" (that is, distorted) when played 
  265. from the Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum. To correct this problem, 
  266. change the Media Vision driver DMA setting to 7.
  267.  
  268. To change the driver settings:
  269.  
  270. 1. Choose the Drivers icon in the Windows Control Panel.
  271.  
  272. 2. Select the Media Vision Wave/MIDI/Aux driver and choose Setup.
  273.  
  274. 3. Under the DMA setting, set the selection to 7.
  275.  
  276. 4. Choose OK. Choose Restart Now.
  277.  
  278. Audio clips should now play correctly.
  279.  
  280.

  290. BOOKSHELF AND WORD FOR WINDOWS INTEGRATION
  291. ==========================================

  293. Setup Issues
  294. ------------
  295. During Setup, you will be given the option of installing 
  296. the feature that integrates Bookshelf and Word for Windows
  297. if your system meets the following conditions:
  298.  
  299. * A non-network version of Word for Windows, version 2.0 
  300. or 6.0, is installed.
  301.  
  302. - For Word for Windows 2.0
  303. * Your WIN.INI file contains a [Microsoft Word 2.0] section 
  304. that includes a programdir={path} line and specifies a valid
  305. WINWORD.EXE file.
  306.  
  307. - For Word for Windows 6.0
  308. * Your WIN.INI file contains a [MS Setup (ACME) Table Files] section 
  309. that includes a WINWORD.EXE@v6...={path}\SETUP\SETUP.EXE line and 
  310. specifies a valid WINWORD.EXE file. 
  311.  
  312. * Your hard drive has enough space to support this feature.
  313.  
  314. If you install the integration feature, the Setup program 
  315. modifies NORMAL.DOT, the global document template for Word 2.0, to 
  316. customize the Word Toolbar and menus.  Changes you have made to 
  317. the Toolbar, to the default menus, and so on, are preserved.
  318.  
  319. The integration feature adds these features to Bookshelf and 
  320. Word: 
  321. The Quote of the Day dialog box, on the Word View menu and 
  322. the Copy to Word command on the Bookshelf Edit menu.
  323.  
  324. To send a topic from Bookshelf to Word, simply choose the
  325. Copy to Word command from the Edit menu. Detailed information
  326. on copying to Word is available from Bookshelf Help.
  327.  
  328.  
  329. Manual Integration of Bookshelf with Word for Windows 6.0
  330. ---------------------------------------------------------
  331. The following directions assume your hard disk drive is drive C,
  332. that Bookshelf is installed in C:\BOOKS94, Windows is installed
  333. in C:\WINDOWS, Word for Windows 6.0 is installed in C:\WINWORD
  334. and that your CD-ROM drive is drive X. 
  335.  
  336. To manually integrate Bookshelf with Word for Windows 6.0:
  337.  
  338. 1. Copy X:\WORD\BSHELF94.DOT to C:\WINWORD\STARTUP
  339.  
  340. 2. Copy X:\WORD\BOOKSHLF.DLL to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  341.  
  342. 3. Copy X:\WORD\BSWORD.HLP to C:\BOOKS94
  343.  
  344. 4. After copying these files to the hard drive you need to 
  345.    remove the Read Only attribute. 
  346.    To remove the Read Only attribute:
  347.  
  348.     a. In the Main Window of Windows Program Manager, open 
  349.        File Manager. 
  350.  
  351.     b. In the C:\WINWORD\STARTUP directory, select the 
  352.        BSHELF94.DOT file. 
  353.  
  354.     c. From the File menu, choose Properties.
  355.  
  356.     d. In the Attributes section, clear the Read Only check box.
  357.  
  358.     e. Choose OK.
  359.  
  360.     f. Repeat steps a through e for BOOKSHLF.DLL and BSWORD.HLP.
  361.  
  362. 5. Use Notepad or any other text editor to add the following 
  363.    entries to the [Bookshelf] section of the WIN.INI file:
  364.  
  365.    [Bookshelf]
  366.    integration=2
  367.    LastQuote=1
  368.    BSWordHelp=C:\BOOKS94\BSWORD.HLP
  369.  
  370. Integration of Bookshelf 1994 and Word for Windows 6.0 is 
  371. now complete.

  373.  
  374. ========================
  375. BOOKSHELF AND WINDOWS NT
  376. ========================
  377.  
  378. The following are known issues related to using Bookshelf with
  379. Windows NT. Where possible, solutions or workarounds are provided.
  380.  
  381.  
  382. Audio and NT
  383. ------------
  384. * When Bookshelf is installed on a machine running
  385. Windows NT 3.1, you may not hear audio clips, such as 
  386. pronunciations, in Bookshelf. Windows NT 3.1 cannot play 
  387. audio in the format that Bookshelf uses.
  388.  
  389. QuickShelf Find and NT
  390. ----------------------
  391. * When your machine is running Windows NT, you can 
  392. experience problems when you select a word in another
  393. application and use QuickShelf to perform a full-text
  394. search on the word in Bookshelf. Bookshelf will appear
  395. but the search will not be performed because QuickShelf 
  396. cannot move the text out of the application running in NT.
  397.  
  398. Keep Bookshelf open on your desktop as an icon, so you 
  399. have easy access to it from other applications when you
  400. want to do a full-text search on a word.
  401.  
  402. QuickShelf Keys and NT
  403. ----------------------
  404. * When your machine is running Windows NT, you may
  405. not be able to use QuickShelf key combinations from 32-bit
  406. applications because QuickShelf cannot move text out 
  407. of these NT applications.
  408.  
  409. In this case, keep Bookshelf open on your desktop as an icon;
  410. this way you will have quick access to it.
  411.  
  412.  
  413. ================
  414. QUICKSHELF NOTES
  415. ================
  416.  
  417. For QuickShelf and Windows NT issues, see the "Bookshelf and 
  418. Windows NT" section, above.
  419.  
  420. QuickShelf Keys and MS-DOS Use
  421. ------------------------------
  422. * QuickShelf keys allow you to look up selected text in Bookshelf 
  423. from any Windows application. However, you cannot 
  424. bring up Bookshelf using QuickShelf keys from an MS-DOS 
  425. application or from the MS-DOS prompt.  Additionally, selected 
  426. text in an MS-DOS application will not be used to perform a 
  427. QuickShelf lookup when using the QuickShelf buttons.  
  428. Other windows applications that do not copy text in the 
  429. standard way also may not work with QuickShelf.
  430.  
  431. QuickShelf and Quote of the Day
  432. -------------------------------
  433. * Whenever you use the Quote of the Day dialog box, the 
  434. QuickShelf keys are disabled.
  435.  
  436.  
  437. QuickShelf and the Clipboard
  438. ----------------------------
  439. * Clicking a QuickShelf button or using a QuickShelf key 
  440. combination replaces the contents of the Clipboard.
  441.  
  442.  
  443. Moving the QuickShelf Toolbar
  444. -----------------------------
  445. * Open the QuickShelf Customize menu by either right-clicking
  446. on the Toolbar or by left-clicking the down arrow button
  447. at the right end of the Toolbar, and then clicking Customize. 
  448. Click the Customize View Tab, and then select either Regular 
  449. buttons or Large buttons, and click OK. QuickShelf now
  450. has a title bar you can click in and then drag to a new
  451. location.
